Welcome to the Geek Glossary. We all know that there is way too much tech jargon that is used. This is the place to be if you don’t understand what we (or any other IT company) are talking about.

All the stuff you don’t see that makes software run.

Front-end = The part that looks good and everybody sees.

Back-end = The functional part that nobody sees except the programmers.

This is a specific name which identifies a website, for example, www.visualclickstudio.com. Basically the address which people can visit when they come to look at your home (home being a website in this example).

Stands for ‘Electronic Commerce’, which means to do business over the internet. Examples of companies like this are www.amazon.com or www.takealot.com. Customers are able to buy products from the website, instead of a physical store.

Back-end = The functional part that nobody sees except the programmers.

Website hosting is a service that allows your website to be stored on a server, which is accessible through the internet.

Stands for Local Area Network. This is a group of computers that share a communications line or wireless link to a server. I.e all computers in an office will most probably be connected to the same LAN.

Search Engine Optimisation – This is the process of getting your website to show up higher on search engines (Google), which results in more people visiting your website. This is important since if you search on Google for “Facebook”, the first result should be www.facebook.com, and not a website like www.f4ceb00k.al, where you will be hacked.

A server is a storage facility which can store all types of files. These files can then be accessed through the internet, such as accessing a website.
